A Hybrid Approach to Surface Engineering Based on Laser Texturing and Coating

A hybrid approach based on laser texturing and surface coating for the combined modification of topography chemistry has been proposed to provide a versatile development functional surfaces. The experimental procedure comprised nanosecond pulsed AISI 304 stainless steel substrates followed by deposition thin (<1 µm) coatings with two different technologies, sol–gel PE-CVD, aim independently modifying chemical composition. Laser scanning strategies achieved variety morphologies an arithmetic mean height (Sa) in range 0.2–6.4 µm. Coatings were then deposited laser-textured quantify effectiveness influence type parameters resulting chemistry. Sol–gel was found be more effective polymeric interlayer, improving adhesion between textured surface; however, this also led increase Sa approximately 0.5 Conversely, PE-CVD while inducing no measurable differences morphology, effectively decoupling processes.
